Areni-1: the world's oldest winery in the rock of Vayots Dzor

Areni-1 sits at approximately 1,010 meters elevation on the left side of the Arpa valley, about one kilometer east of the village of Areni in Vayots Dzor. The cave is carved into limestone cliff above the river, comprising three chambers extending roughly 40 meters deep. Locally it is known by the name Bird's Cave (Armenian Tsaghkavank-related, colloquially "Birds' Cave"). From outside the entrance appears unassuming; the extraordinary lies within, where the dry, temperature-stable interior has preserved organic finds across millennia.

The world's oldest complete winery — press, fermentation vessels, grape remains, around 4100–4000 BC. Alongside it, the oldest known leather shoe, cut from a single piece of cowhide (around 3600–3500 BC), and human skulls with preserved brain tissue. The dry, temperature-stable interior kept all of it intact across millennia; excavated from 2007.

History and excavations

From 2007, Armenian, US, and Irish teams cleared the wine press in the rear of the cave; chemical analysis found tartaric acid — the oldest reliable evidence of winemaking anywhere. In 2008 a doctoral student uncovered the leather shoe, preserved by sheep dung and the steady climate; skulls with brain tissue in the same layers point to Copper Age rites.

Legend & myth

There's no legend of its own — the name Bird's Cave points only to the birds that nest in the rock crevices above the Arpa. Because of the skulls with brain tissue and the carefully laid-down vessels, researchers debate whether the site had a cultic role; that stays unproven.

Why the visit is worthwhile

You stand on the exact ground where people pressed grapes and left the juice to ferment more than six thousand years ago — the oldest proven winery in the world, along with the oldest known leather shoe and preserved brain tissue. That density of genuine evidence exists almost nowhere else. The original finds now sit in the History Museum in Yerevan; here you see the original chambers and the hollows in the floor where they were found, the Arpa right below. Down in the valley the estates still press the famous Areni red — and on our routes we taste it where the story of wine began.

Location: approx. 1 km east of Areni along the M2 by the Arpa riverside. Access fully asphalt; parking available at roadside or cave entrance. Accessible year-round; the cool interior is pleasant in summer, winter approach may be damp. Bring: sturdy footwear, flashlight or headlamp for rear chambers, a jacket for interior temperature. Original artifacts like the shoe and wine press are held in the National History Museum of Armenia in Yerevan; on-site you see the cave and excavation context. Areni itself offers wineries for complementary tastings. Visit duration: approximately 30 to 60 minutes.
