Fitness
Little required; you stand a lot, occasionally lift a traction board and get dirty doing it.
Why these months
From December to March we advise against it: frozen ground gives no honest feedback, and the mud recovery drills fall away entirely.
Driving experience
Not needed — the day is built for people who have none yet.
What to expect in Armenia
On a training ground a driving mistake costs nothing but a little pride. That is what this day is for.
It is aimed at you if you own a four-wheel-drive vehicle, or want to rent one, and eventually notice that the button with the differential symbol has never been pressed. You will learn nothing spectacular here. You will learn what the vehicle does before the vehicle does it.
The morning is technique, mostly stationary: low range, locks, tyre pressure, the approach angle — the angle at which the bumper grounds out before the tyre does — where the centre of gravity sits and why a vehicle tips on a slope earlier than your instinct expects. Then you drive. Start up a climb and abort it again without stalling. Reverse back down a ramp because forward is no longer an option. Articulation, until one wheel hangs in the air and you feel how little drive is left. Walking pace over rock steps without tearing the tyre sidewalls.
The afternoon is recovery. Placing traction boards properly, flat rather than angled. Rigging a recovery strap so that nobody stands in the line of fire. When a winch is the wrong answer. And last, the least spectacular thing of all: how to notice a mistake while it is still cheap.
We work in small groups so everybody gets behind the wheel often enough. Two to four participants suit us better than eight who watch.
There is no certificate at the end and no exam. What you take away is the preparation we would like people to have before they drive through Syunik on their own — and a sense of when to get out and walk a section before driving it. That costs five minutes and, when it matters, saves the recovery truck this region does not have anyway.
Book a self-drive route afterwards and you will feel the difference by the second day at the latest.

Safety and weather
When the weather doesn't cooperate
Rain is no reason to cancel here, it is the better training day: mud shows mistakes immediately. In a thunderstorm we break off, because the ground is open and exposed.
How we keep you safe
Driving is on a marked ground at walking pace, with an instructor outside the danger zone at every exercise. During recovery drills everyone else stands behind the vehicle line, never beside a loaded strap.
