Fitness
Physically low: a scree walk-in, standing upright, hanging. Circulation and nerves are asked for more than muscle.
Why these months
From November to April we advise against it: wet rock at the edge, iced approaches and stiff fingers during harness checks are three reasons too many to be working on a cliff top.
What to expect in Armenia
Sixty metres is nothing from an aircraft and everything from a cliff edge. That contradiction is what this activity is about.
The sequence is short, and the part you actually do is shorter still. The riggers build the rope system at the edge above a dry gorge in the Ararat region, you are put into a full-body harness, someone checks every buckle, then a second person checks it again. After that you stand at the edge and wait for your body to agree with what your head has decided.
The jump itself is a step forward, not a leap. A short free fall follows, then the rope takes hold and swings you out into the gorge in a wide arc. That arc is what stays with you; the fall is too brief to process. Then you hang there, see the wall from the inside, and get hauled back up.
From arrival to jump usually takes one to two hours. Most of it is waiting, watching, and realising that watching does not make it easier. Whoever goes first has the better deal.
Physically little is asked: stand upright, let yourself go, follow instructions. The rest is in your head, which is why we say it plainly here: turning back at the edge is not doing anything wrong. It happens regularly, nobody is embarrassed by it, and it costs nobody anything.
Wear something long and fairly close-fitting; in a full-body harness, loose clothing presses in places you did not think about beforehand. Long hair gets tied back, and pockets stay empty.
In Vayots Dzor there is the same thing from a hundred and twenty metres. The difference lies in the second before the rope takes hold, and that is a decision for another day.

Safety and weather
When the weather doesn't cooperate
No jumping in rain: wet rock at the edge and wet ropes change the conditions for everyone involved. If a thunderstorm approaches we clear the edge immediately and jump another day.
How we keep you safe
Jumps are made on a professionally rigged rope system with redundant protection. Full-body harness and helmet are mandatory, and every buckle is checked by two people before anyone approaches the edge. Anyone who stops at the edge stops — there is no persuading and no pushing.
