Why these months
Possible all year, but in January and February we advise against it: low cloud on the ridges and short days often leave no visual flying window for days.
What to expect in Armenia
From three hundred metres above the ridge the road below becomes a pale thread that needs three hairpins where you fly straight. A helicopter makes visible in thirty minutes what otherwise takes two days of driving.
From above, the landscape suddenly makes sense. You see why a road takes a detour, where the snowfields on Mount Aragats survive into July, how small a village is against its own mountain. Lake Sevan has a colour from the air that does not exist from the shore. Above the gorge at Garni you see the basalt columns from the top rather than the bottom, and the proportions finally add up.
Flights are arranged on request, with a route that fits the occasion. A scenic loop over a region, a transfer to somewhere the track would take too long, an approach to a mountain slope — what is possible depends on the departure point, the weight on board and the weather, and it is agreed beforehand. Setting down on a mountain meadow, the downwash flattens the grass, and anything not tied down ends up thirty metres away.
It is loud. You wear a headset and talk over the intercom, with the side effect that every comment is heard by everyone. You still hear the rotor, through the seat. The windows are curved and not always clean; to take photographs, switch off the flash and get closer to the glass than feels natural.
Unsettled air is the normal state over mountain country, especially in the afternoon. If you are sensitive to it, take the early slot.
Flights only go in visual conditions. Low cloud on the ridges, fog in the valley or strong wind means postponement. So keep a spare slot free and do not put the flight on the last day before your flight home — that is the most common planning mistake with this activity.

Safety and weather
When the weather doesn't cooperate
Flights go in visual conditions only. Low cloud on the ridges, fog or strong wind means postponement; in mountain country that is the rule rather than the exception, so allow buffer time.
Weather window: Daylight visual flying; over mountain country the air is markedly calmer in the morning than in the afternoon.
How we keep you safe
A briefing before every flight: approach the aircraft from the front and in the pilot’s field of view, never uphill towards the tail rotor, nothing loose in your hands. Belts on before start-up, headset on. If conditions fall below visual minima, there is no departure.
